#ImStillAGirl Girls are constantly bombarded with statements such as, act like a lady, sit like a girl, dress like a girl from an early age, but what does it mean to look like a girl? Is it the clothes you wear, the way you carry yourself, or your voice? According to Model Denise Bidot, there is no right way to being a woman, starting a campaign that aims to empower all women and girls who think that they are different from the standard woman embracing your individuality and allowing yourself to be yourself. It's just a culmination of everything I've worked for and stood for. It's about culture and religion and realizing that this is a moment where we all need to stand together. Being a woman ...... it's about being who you want to be ;crushing the stereotypes that the world has placed on you prime example, Women in Sports. Fact: The US women the most medals in Rio, 291 out of 554 to be exact , but even with all the achievements women have made, girls are generally discouraged from participating in sports because athleticism depends on strength and strength is often seen as a masculine trait. The lack of open spaces and misrepresentation of women through gender roles have limited the idea of what a girl should be. Last year, Charles C. Dowd developed a "what is considered a girls job" book, The A to Z Guide to Jobs for Girls Coloring & Activity Book after a conversation with his young daughter on gender working roles, with the tagline, you can be anything you want. He wanted to teach his daughter and all young girls that they could be anything they wanted to be as well as, break away from the traditional idea of what a woman or girl should look like, With the underepresentation and misrepresentation of women in mainstream media, girls are often left with skewed images of themselves-[ as women, we've been taught to strive for this unrealistic image of what a woman is and often time our roles are of less importance than our male counterparts; as girl, if you don't fit the standard (prime, proper, obedient) image then there must be something wrong with you].
If history has taught us one thing it's women are trailblazers like, Buffalo Calf Road who fought against the colonization, oppression, and murder of the indigenous peoples of America, Sayyid al Hurra the great pirate queen, Malala Yousafzai whose advocating for girls education around the globe, or the girls from Pretoria Girls High in South Africa (#StopRacismAtPretoriaGirlsHigh) who are fighting racism, protesting against the school's discriminatory code of conduct, and protecting their right to wear their natural hair. So what does a girl look like? She looks like herself whether its, playing with cars, doing her makeup, teaching, creating, swimming, fixing a car, starting a revolution; as long as she's being her authentic self, she's #StillAGirl
